Overview
KOSPIE is a scholarship from DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. It sends Master's students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to Germany to do the project work of their Master's thesis under a German professor.
You spend 7 months (September to March) at one of six TU9 technical universities: RWTH Aachen, TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, Leibniz Universität Hannover or Universität Stuttgart. Applications for the KIT Campus Alpin, Garmisch-Partenkirchen cannot be considered.
Who it is for: students of an IIT in Engineering, Mathematics or Natural Sciences who are in the 2nd semester of a 2-year Master's programme, the 4th semester of a 3-year MTech, or the 8th semester of an integrated / dual degree programme. You need a minimum of 8.5 CGPA, above-average GATE scores, and a letter from a German university teacher confirming that he or she will supervise you.
What you get: 992 euros per month, a one-off research allowance of 266 euros, cover towards health, accident and liability insurance, a 4 to 6 week German language course at the host university, a rent subsidy where appropriate, and a lump sum travel subsidy.
How to apply: register on the DAAD portal (meindaad.de), fill the online form and upload your documents as PDFs. The DAAD Office in New Delhi does not accept direct or incomplete applications. German language skills are not needed when you apply, but very good English is expected.

How you're selected
Applications have to be submitted via the DAAD portal. The final decision lies with the Selection Committee of the DAAD. Results will be announced by May.

How do I apply? Only online through the DAAD portal at meindaad.de. Register, generate the recommendation form in the portal, get it filled by your teacher, then upload all documents as PDF files. The DAAD Regional Office New Delhi will not accept direct or incomplete applications. Note that the application portal for this programme only opens while the application period is running.
Do I need to know German? No. German language skills are not required at the time of application, but very good English is expected. A German course at your host university is part of the programme, and passing it is required for further funding.
