Overview
The RMEWF Education Grant helps Ex-servicemen and their widows pay for their children's education. It is paid from the Raksha Mantri's Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund (RMEWF) and administered by the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB).
The scheme started back in 1981 with just ₹15 per child per month. It was last revised on 1 November 2025 to a monthly grant of ₹2,000 per month per child, for a maximum of two children, payable up to graduation. Widows can also claim it to do a post-graduation degree.
One important limit: this grant is not applicable for professional or technical courses or degrees. If your child is doing engineering, medicine or a similar professional course, look at the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) instead, which is designed for exactly that.
You must also not already be getting an education allowance or similar benefit from the State government or your employer, and the child must complete the course successfully. There are special rules for twins, and if the first or second child sadly passes away, the next child becomes eligible.
How to claim: apply online at online.ksb.gov.in after each academic year is over. Your Zila Sainik Welfare Office (ZSWO) checks the application and forwards it via the Rajya Sainik Board to the KSB Secretariat for payment. Cut-off dates are published in the NEWS section of the KSB portal, and cases older than one year are not accepted — so do not delay your claim.

Documents you'll need
- Service Document / Discharge Book of the ESM (personal, service and family particulars pages)
- ESM or Widow I-Card issued by the respective ZSB
- Marksheet / school progress card of the child
- Part-II Order naming the children (or a proper entry in the Discharge Book)
- Self-certificate that no education allowance/scholarship was taken from the State or employer
- Bank account number and IFSC of the ESM
- Aadhaar card copy of the ESM
How you're selected
Apply online on the KSB portal after each academic year is completed. The Zila Sainik Welfare Office (ZSWO) scrutinises the application, calls you for verification, and forwards it through the Rajya Sainik Board to the KSB Secretariat for approval and payment within the current financial year. Cut-off dates for all categories are published in the NEWS section of the portal. Cases older than one year are not accepted.
