Overview
The Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM) is West Bengal's flagship scholarship for meritorious students from economically weaker families. It is run by the Government of West Bengal for students studying at institutions inside the state.
The amount depends on your course, paid per month: ₹1,000 for Class XI-XII (HS), D.El.Ed and UG Arts/Commerce; ₹1,500 for UG Science, other UGC-approved professional UG courses, Polytechnic diplomas and medical diploma courses; ₹2,000 for PG Arts/Commerce; ₹2,500 for PG Science and other UGC-approved PG courses; and ₹5,000 for UG/PG Engineering and MBBS. Research scholars get ₹5,000 (M.Phil) or ₹8,000 (PhD) per month.
To qualify you generally need at least 60% marks in your last qualifying exam (Higher Secondary, Diploma or UG level), or 53% in your Honours subject for PG level (55% for DTE courses). Your family income must not be more than ₹2,50,000 per year — though this income limit does not apply to Board Toppers, Kanyashree (K3) students, or M.Phil/PhD applicants.
You apply online at svmcm.wb.gov.in — no hard copy is needed. Money is paid straight to your bank account, so bank details are compulsory. The scholarship is renewed each year if you pass in the first attempt with good marks (60% up to UG level, 50% at PG level). Check the official portal for the current year's application window.

How you're selected
Merit-cum-means. Applications are ranked in descending order of marks in the qualifying examination (along with the income criterion) and scholarships are sanctioned strictly by merit list, subject to available funds. Separate merit lists are prepared for UG Arts, UG Commerce and UG Science.
