Overview
The DAAD Study Visits for Academics – Artists and Architects programme lets Indian university teachers spend one to three months at a state or state-recognised university in Germany. The goal, in DAAD's words, is "to promote artistic cooperations with German host institutions". The scholarships are paid for by the German Federal Foreign Office.
This is not a scholarship for students. You must already teach at an institute of higher education in India. Your subject must be architecture (including interior design, monument conservation, urban or regional planning, landscape architecture or planning), fine art, film, design, visual communication, performing arts, or music. Before you apply, you must agree your project with a partner in Germany.
DAAD pays 2,000 euros a month if you are an assistant teacher, assistant professor or lecturer, and 2,150 euros a month if you are a professor. You also get a travel allowance. Health insurance is compulsory in Germany; if you are not already covered, DAAD insures you and takes the cost out of your scholarship.
You apply online through the DAAD portal, which opens at least six weeks before each deadline. You upload the application form, a CV of up to three pages, a project statement of up to ten pages, a time schedule, and a written confirmation from your German host. An independent committee selects the scholars. Funding can be claimed only once in three years and the grant cannot be renewed.

- Confirmation from the academic host in Germany, referring to your project and guaranteeing a workplace at the German host institute
- German or English translations of any document submitted in another language
How you're selected
An independent selection committee reviews all applications. The two most important criteria are your specialist qualification (which must be visible in your CV) and a convincing, well-planned project. The committee also gives due consideration to equal opportunities. The committee decides the exact length of your funding based on your work plan.
FAQs
Who can apply? Only university teachers. You must teach at an institute of higher education in your home country, and your subject must be architecture, fine art, film, design, visual communication, performing arts or music. School and college students are not eligible.
How much money do I get? DAAD pays 2,000 euros per month for assistant teachers, assistant professors and lecturers, and 2,150 euros per month for professors. A travel allowance is added. If you have a disability or chronic illness, you can apply for extra support for justified additional costs.
How long is the funding? One to three months. You say in your application how long you want, and the selection committee fixes the final period based on your work plan.
What is the last date to apply? The official page lists two yearly rounds for India — 7 October and 4 March — but it does not print the year, and DAAD says deadlines are updated every year in the second quarter. Please check the official DAAD scholarship database page for the current date before you apply.
How do I apply? Everything is done online in the DAAD portal, which opens at least six weeks before the deadline. Register, download and fill the application form, then upload it with your CV (max 3 pages), your project statement (max 10 pages), your time schedule, and the confirmation letter from your German host. All files must be PDFs. Incomplete applications are rejected.
Can I get it again or renew it? No. The official page says the grant is non-renewable, and funding may be claimed only once within three years.
